Camping Basics
The first thing you will have to do is decide what size and type of tent you will need, depending on how many people are going and your budget. After buying your tent, spray it with water-resistant spray and buy a tarp for use as a shade against the sun. Make sure your tent is big enough for everyone to sleep comfortably and still have room for your luggage. Some people bring air mattresses or foam ones to make their stay more comfortable.
Don't overpack. If you are going for a short time, you won't need a week's wardrobe. Two to three sets of clothing should be fine for a 4-5 day trip. Even if it is warm out, bring a light jacket or sweater for the evenings and rain gear. If you plan on hiking, bring a good pair of hiking boots that provide ankle support.
For your food, you will want to bring a cooler or two filled with ice. If you can, bring mostly non-perishable food like bread, nuts and canned foods. It will be easier if you plan a menu before leaving. This will save you time once you set up camp. Depending upon your location, you may be able to find food at the campsite. For example, if you're camping near a lake or a river, you could bring some fishing tackle and catch a fresh meal to cook over a campfire. Be sure to check with the park rangers or site officials to ensure that it's safe to eat what you catch.
If you are bringing kids along, don't forget to pack a few board games and books they will enjoy. Also bring outdoor activites such as baseball and soccer equipment, or frisbees. Have the children help around the campsite by doing dishes or gathering laundry, this will give them a sense of helping and occupy some of their time.
You should not set a rigid schedule, this trip is about relaxing. Leave plenty of time to play and rest. To avoid boredom take walks, go swimming or fishing. You do not have to spend every second of your time at the campsite. Nature hikes are a good way to relax and get your kids interested in wildlife and the outdoors. Remember to relax and rest and enjoy your trip!
